Big Internal Shakeup At Facebook As The Company Grows Up
There’s a big internal shakeup going on at Facebook.
Liz Gannes at AllThingsD got the scoop: the company is reorganizing into key product areas like privacy and communication. A memo describing the changes went out today.
Historically, Facebook has been organized like a huge startup, with engineers making a lot of the major decisions.
As recently as a year ago, as outlined in this Guardian article, there was one big engineering group. That group would often split up into ad hoc teams of three to five engineers to work on a single project at a time. Engineers had a lot of freedom deciding which projects they wanted to work on, and had broad freedom to make changes across the site.
